Medicare Part B
Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B make up Original Medicare. On its own, Medicare Part B covers the following services:
- Services deemed medically necessary
- Preventive services that are meant to prevent illness or detect it early when treatment is likely to be more effective
Preventive and Screening Services
There are a variety of preventive and screening services that Part B will cover, including but not limited to:
• Alcohol misuse screenings & counseling
• Cardiovascular disease screenings
• Cardiovascular disease (behavioral therapy)
• Cervical & vaginal cancer screening
• Colorectal cancer screenings
• Depression screenings
• Diabetes screenings
• Flu shots
• Glaucoma tests
• Hepatitis B shots
• Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection screening
• Hepatitis C screening test
• HIV screening
• Lung cancer screening
• Mammograms (screening)
• Nutrition therapy services
• Obesity screenings & counseling
• One-time “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit
• Prostate cancer screenings
• Vaccines
• Tobacco use cessation counseling
• Yearly “Wellness” visit
What Else Does Medicare Part B Cover?
Ambulance services. Ground ambulance transportation for medically necessary services is covered, especially if transportation in any other vehicle could be dangerous for your health. It may also cover helicopter or airplane emergency ambulance transportation if necessary.
Clinical trials or clinical research. Clinical research may involve surgical treatments, diagnostic tests, new types of care, or medicine.
Durable medical equipment (DME). Part B covers durable medical equipment for home use if your doctor prescribes it. This equipment can include but is not limited to:
• Blood sugar meters/test strips
• Canes
• CPAP devices
• Crutches
• Hospital beds
• Home infusion services
• Infusion pumps & supplies
• Oxygen equipment & accessories
• Patient lifts
• Walkers
• Wheelchairs & scooters
Mental health services. Part B will cover the following mental health services:
• Diagnostic tests
• One depression screening per year
• Individual and group psychotherapy with doctors/licensed professionals
• Psychiatric evaluation
• Family counseling if it helps with your treatment
• Testing to evaluate your current treatment
• Medication management
• Treatment of inappropriate alcohol and drug use
Limited outpatient prescription drugs. A few examples of outpatient prescriptions covered by Part B include:
• Blood clotting factors you give yourself by injection
• Drugs used with durable medical equipment
